Southern California Mountains Foundation

Volunteers Sought for National Trails Day in Big Bear

Join the Southern California Mountains Foundation and donate your time on Saturday, June 2nd to show your support for the local effort to improve trails in the San Bernardino National Forest.  We will rally together in Big Bear on June 2, at the Big Bear Discovery Center to improve Cougar Crest trail, one of the most popular trails on the north shore of Big Bear Lake.  Lunch will be provided to all registered participants, and the first 75 registrants will receive a Scenic Skychair ticket to Snow Summit.  This event is sponsored by: Big Bear Mountain Resorts, Big Bear Valley Trails Foundation, San Bernardino National Forest, Kodiak 100, City of Big Bear Lake, County of San Bernardino and the Southern California Mountains Foundation.

Together we'll improve this 3-mile trail by improving drainage, realigning problem sections of the trail and performing general maintenance.  We encourage you to take the National Trails Day® pledge and join us as we hit the trail and leave it better than we found it during #NationalTrailsDay. To register for this event or to learn more visit: www.bbntd.eventbright.com ,  www.mountainsfoundation.org or www.trailsfoundation.org

“We’re excited to see so many valuable partners coming together for the benefit of Big Bear’s recreational trails.  National Trails Day is the perfect time to celebrate this teamwork. The City of Big Bear Lake, San Bernardino County, the Southern California Mountains Foundation, the Big Bear Valley Trails Foundation, REI, the United States Forest Service, and, of course, the giving members of the public.  We’re committed to mobilizing more people to get outdoors and experience our beautiful National Forest.” said Bennett Rossell, Non-Motorized Trails Coordinator, Southern California Mountains Foundation and Big Bear Valley Trails Foundation.

Check-in will begin at 8:30am at the Big Bear Discovery Center, 40971 Hwy 38/North Shore Drive, Fawnskin, CA 92333.   Trail work will be performed from 9am to 12pm, with BBQ lunch following at the Big Bear Discovery Center.  Participants are encouraged to wear closed-toed shoes, dress layered, wear long pants, and bring reusable water bottles and gloves.  All tools and instruction will be provided.

The efforts from this year’s National Trails Day will complement the ongoing maintenance and trail-building within the Big Bear Valley.

Since 1993, National Trails Day®, sponsored by American Hiking Society, has grown to inspire many thousands of people nationwide to celebrate and give back to the trails they love on one dedicated day.  America's 200,000 miles of trails allow access to our natural world for recreation, education, exploration, solitude, inspiration, and much more.

Together we'll improve 2,802 miles of trail on National Trails Day®

Each year people all across the country set out on trails in celebration of American Hiking Society's National Trails Day®. This year, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the National Trail System, American Hiking Society has set a goal to improve 2,802 miles of trail—the distance across the US—on June 2nd for National Trails Day®.

Mountaintop Trail Rally

    • mtr poster
In short, Big Bear’s Mountaintop Trail Rally is just what it says it is- a gathering… for trail users… on the top of a mountain… and we want you there. Equal parts race and leisure, MTR is much more than getting out on trails. It’s a celebration of our beautiful trail system in Big Bear and what all trail stakeholders (which includes the community) have accomplished improving it throughout the years. What’s more, all proceeds directly benefit Big Bear’s trail system, so we’ll have more to celebrate next year. Presented by Team Big Bear, and through the strong partnership between the Southern California Mountains Foundation and the Big Bear Valley Trails Foundation, the Mountaintop Trail Rally aims to unite the widest range of trail users in a single place through a competitive mountain bike race, non-competitive mountain bike ride, trail run, and hike. In other words, any way you enjoy…
